Each study listed in the Register of One-Name Studies is classified
into one of three categories, A, B or C.
When applying, the member must propose to the Registrar which of
the following categories is believed to be the most appropriate
to indicate the level of their research on that surname.
Surname for which the member represents a fully constituted
one-name society, and who publishes a regular one-name periodical
or newsletter, researches and collects all references to the
registered surname and has collected a substantial body of
worldwide data over a period of time.
The member has the rights and obligations of membership on behalf
of the society.
Surname which the member researches and for which the
member collects all references and has accumulated a substantial
body of worldwide data over a period of years.
The member may or may not produce a newsletter.
Surname for which the member has started a one-name study
and has not yet built up a substantial worldwide collection but
fully intends to acquire sufficient data to transfer to Category A or B.
The member may or may not produce a newsletter.
After Registration, members may apply (with supporting details)
to the Registrar for their category to be revised.
