About the study

I started researching my Grandmother maiden name - Yarroll nearly 50 years ago. Initially I went to St Catherine's to look at the Indexes. Starting with the Death's, listing all the Yarroll and any variants. Some time later after the records had moved to Middleton Street, I was able to progress to the Births. At the same time I started collecting the Marriage Certificates for the Yarrolls. I got to nearly 1900. Since Middleton Street closed I have been able to complete the lists on line but have bought no more certificates.

Yarrell, Yerrell, Yirrell

Name origin

My earliest Yarroll - Thomas came from Northampton. I noticed during my study that a lot of Yerrell's came from Bedfordshire.

Historical occurrences of the name

From memory there was a famous Yarrell who was connected to Kew Gardens but I will confirm this at a later date/

Name frequency

Again from memory, I believe there were 157 Deaths between 1837 -1998. There were under 100 marriages. When I noted this in my mind, I hadn't completed the births. I learnt last week that there are 52 people with the Yarroll name living at this moment.

Distribution of the name

I do know that a couple of brothers in the 1830s or 1840s went to America.
