About the Whittall One-Name Study

I have been interested in compiling my own family tree for around two years. I quickly found quite a bit of information on my Paternal name (Whittall) and have in my research found a couple of people that have really caught fascinated me. In an attempt to find more relatives and after reading a magazine article I decided to create a database of all the Whittalls that I could find. I managed to find just under 500. I have now come back to this study after about 9 months and I am now trying to match all these single people with their resppective Parents, Spouses and children. All at the moment with the help of the listings in the 1881 census returns.

Variants

I am also going to be researching the variant Whittal

Origin of the surname

The name is of Anglo-Saxon origin. Evidence suggests that the Whittall name was first found in Lancashire where a family seat was held just before and after the Norman Conquest in 1066.

Historical occurrences

The first recorded instances of the name is in the Domesday Book compiled in 1086 for William I (William the Conqueror). In the UK the name is centered in the Midlands. Many Whittalls emigrated to Canada, USA and Australia.
