The aim of this study is to discover the origins of the surname Veriod; does the name come from France or is it a misspelling of another name. Once the name was established - in 1784 - family members were remarkably consistent about the spelling. The name has been wrongly transcribed numerous times from the census, however examination of the orginal records show the correct spelling. Most of these incorrect transcriptions have been reported and corrected. All the incidences of the surname on the English censuses 1841 - 1901 have been added to the family tree and matched to the names found on the GRO indexes 1837 - 1930. I am currently researching information about the family's activities while living in Chard, and trying to find family members prior to 1784. Various other members of the family are also researching the family tree and we have exchanged information to help to complete the family tree.
I am not officially researching any variants of the name, but misspellings have included 'Verriod' and 'Veriott'. There is a single incidence of the name 'Veriod' on familysearch.org in 1603 - a christening in Colyton, Devon. Other members of this family have names spelt 'Veriad' 'Veread' and 'Veryard' these may prove to be Veriod ancestors, however there is no evidence to confirm this at present.
The family 'legend' on the origin of the name is that the Veriods fled France because of religious persecution during the 18th century, it was also suggested that the family went to Ireland before settling in the West Country.
The family was at its largest between 1877 and 1930, with 38 children born with the Veriod surname.
The first confirmed instances of the name were found in the South West of England on the Somerset/Dorset border. During the 19th century members of the family moved east - until there were Veriod family members living in South London and Norwich as well as the South West.
