Research into the Euridge & Uridge family name started in 1980 after we had stillborn twins. The doctors advised us to look into our family history to see if there was a genetic reason. We never found any reason but instead started a life-long interest in family history.
I knew very little about my paternal ancestors, my father Reginald Red Euridge had left his home in Burton upon Trent Staffordshire, at an early age to join the Royal Marines. His parents disapproved of his marriage to my mother Kathleen Kay Veasey and there was a rift in the family. Tragically, on December 23, 1958 Red was killed in a motor-scooter accident, leaving Kay a widow at 34, with nine children to care for. So I knew very little about my father, or his ancestors.
Fortunately my paternal aunt Lizzie had kept in touch with the family and I contacted her. She told me that my great-great-grandfather was French. I assumed this meant that the family came from France. However later I found that my 3 x great-grandfather had the forename French Uridge, and was baptized on 8 March 1789 at Eynsford, Kent. He spent all of his comparatively short life there and was buried on 11 November 1835, at the age of 46.
Originally I focused my research in the Kent area, however I quickly expanded my interests to include EURIDGEs and URIDGEs globally and became a member of the Guild of One-Name Studies in 1982.
The main variant is my own maiden name of EURIDGE, however other variants used are UERIDGE UHRIDGE URADGE URAGE UREDGE URIAGE URIDG URIGE URYGE EUREDGE EURIDG EURIGE EWERIDGE EWREDGE EWRIDG EWRIDGE EWRIGE EWRITCH EYREDGE and probably more...
Urich, Uridge: Thomas de IWrugg 1327, Thomas Euregg 1332, Richard Ewreg 1525 SRSx. From Eridge in Frant (Sx) 'The Oxford Dictionary of English Surnames'
The earliest record, currently included in the database, is Richard URYGE who was born in c1530 at Uckfield, Sussex. He married Elizabeth ADROLDE on 26 June 1552 at Uckfield, Sussex.
In an extract of an Office of National Statistics database for 2002, the name URIDGE is ranked 37228, with 83 instances. The name EURIDGE is ranked 65961, with 33 instances.
There are three main family groups, originating from branches in Sussex and Kent. The latter includes my own family who settled in Devon. Several descendants of these branches have emigrated to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States of America.
I continue to strive to find a connection between the Sussex and Kent families and am confident there is a link. Hopefully the DNA project can provide the missing links.
All the registered births, marriages and deaths for the URIDGE and EURIDGE surnames have been extracted from the General Register Offices indexes for England and Wales (since 1837).
Other details that have also been extracted and indexed includes the International Genealogical Index (IGI), census returns 1841-1901, parish registers, burial records, wills and grants of probate in England and Wales.
This information is available on the EURIDGE, URIDGE One-Name Study website.
Detailed narratives are available and can be easily searched in the surnames section or by searching the website. Additionally there are descendancy charts of the main families. You will also find a series of databases on births, marriages and deaths, and wills that are linked to Uridge Archive held with the Guild of One-Name Studies.
A summarisation of resources searched together with a list of sources in the narrative section, details what records are included in the One-Name Study.
A Uridge DNA project has been set up with Family Tree DNA.
Males bearing the name Uridge or Euridge, and their derivatives, are invited to join the project by donating a sample of their DNA.
Details of the project can be found at Uridge DNA project.
The EURIDGE, URIDGE One-Name Study website is being continually updated and currently contains 2500+ people. A list of new or changed narratives is available.
Additionally there is a Uridge blog that details recent changes and new information.
Details of the DNA project can be found at Uridge DNA project.
