The surname TYTHCOTT or TITHECOTT (with various different spellings) comes from the area around Bideford and Barnstaple in North Devon. Whether the hamlet called Tithecot (near Buckland Brewer) got its name from the inhabitants or the inhabitants from the place name is not clear, but an early reference to a “de Tuddecot” goes back as far as the twelfth century.
Some TITHECOTTs moved from North Devon to South Wales in the nineteenth century, seeking work, and there is a cluster of families there now. Others moved to London and elsewhere, whilst some emigrated (mainly to North America), so that the name is found in Canada and the USA, but also in Australia and New Zealand.
