Origin of the surname

The Family of Tunesi is undoubtedly of Italian origin hailing from Northern Italy notably the Venezia Guilia, Piedmont, Lombardy and the Dalmatia (in old Yugoslavia). In all probability the family comes from the small village of Tunes near to Viptano in the Dolomites in alpine northern Italy. It is quite an uncommon surname in Italy today, that being said there are a good many representatives of the family in Italy, a number in Switzerland, the UK and the USA, as well as a scattering throughout other parts of the world if you happen to 'google' the name. All individuals that you find with the name in the UK have a common descent from Felippo (later called Philip) Tunesi who was born in Como c.1843 having emigrated from Italy in the early 1860's.

Historical occurrences

Armorial Bearings were granted to Felippo's Great Grandson John Joseph Arthur Tunesi (b. 5 Sept 1924, d. 10 Jan 1999) by Lord Lyon King of Arms on 20 November 1984 with recognition of the Scots Territorial Designation of Tunesi of Liongam to be borne by his descendants.

Frequency of the name

The Tunesi's in England are all related being descendants of Felippo Tunesi and his wife Mary Ann Maria Jennings.

Distribution of the name

Felippo Tunesi firstly settled in Kensington and thereafter the family moved South to Clapham and Wandsworth in South London. Today the majority of the family still live in London although there are now branches in the Home Counties, notably Surrey and Kent. There are also representatives in Lancashire, Yorkshire, and Australia all of whom descend from Felippo. Other Tunesi families are resident in France, Switzerland and the USA.
