The main modern variant of the surname is Tilstone, which occurs mostly in Staffordshire and I believe originates from a single family member who settled in the county in the 16th Century. A small but important branch with the spelling Tillstone are unique to Sussex, this time dating from the 17th Century, and arriving I believe from London where a small group of Tilstons originally from Cheshire had established themselves during the previous century. An even smaller group, spelling the name Tillston, are a fairly modern branch probably begun by a mis-spelling of Tilston in the last quarter of the 19th Century.
