The Threader One-Name study, like many one-name studies, grew out of an attempt to trace my own ancestry. I started collecting information for my own tree in 2001. I soon realised that not all but many families had a connection to one another and wanted to know more. I subsequently joined the Guild of One-Name Studies and registered the name in 2006.
The picture is of Joshua Threader, my grandfather, born 1896 in Sandridge Hertfordshire and his family can be traced back to 1742 in Stapleford Tawney in Essex.
Thredder
The Threader surname appears to have an occupational origin. It has been listed as being of Anglo-Saxon origin for one who keeps the shuttles threaded in weaving and also for a maker of thread.
At this moment in time I have not come across any instances of notable Threaders.
From the index of the 1881 census produced by the Church of Latter Day Saints, there were 153 recorded instances of Threader/Thredder in that census.
From an Office of National Statistics database dated September 2002 there are 164 recorded instances of Threader/Thredder.
In 1881 most Threaders are to be found in the South East of England, with a small pocket in Lancashire and Gloucestershire
