About the Teden One-Name Study

Most, if not all, of those bearing the surname TEDEN in England and Wales appear to be descended from just one couple - William John TEDEN and his wife Catherine MOOR, who married in 1829 in Marylebone, Middlesex, England.

Of the 193 TEDEN entries found in the England and Wales Birth, Marriage and Death Indexes from 1837-2005, just two have NOT yet been attributed to descendants of this couple.

My TEDEN one-name study primarily focuses on the TEDEN family of England and Wales, however I am also interested in other TEDEN families across the world while I try to make a connection between all of them.

Origin of the surname

Although I have not yet found the birth of my ancestor William TEDEN, research on the American TEDEN family(s) indicates an origin in Sweden.

Historical occurrences

The closest we come to a 'famous' TEDEN is probably Derek Edmund Teden (1916-1940), who played rugby for England and the Barbarians in the late 1930s before his tragic death during WW2. For a full bio, see http://therugbyhistorysociety.co.uk/teden.html

Distribution of the name

My own TEDEN ancestors are very London/Middlesex centric, with Saint Pancras being the main centre of births, marriages and deaths in the 19th century

There is also the family which began in Ireland, before emigrating first to Lanarkshire (Scotland) and then to Rhode Island (USA)

Finally the Swedish Teden clan who seem to have arrived in New York (USA) before settling in Massachusetts (USA)
