There is a placename Swingfield in Kent. However, there is no evidence that the surname originated in that locality. People with the name Swinfield live(d) principally in Leicestershire and Warwickshire.

Richard de Swinfield, Bishop of Hereford from 1283 until his death in 1317.

Distribution of the name

In England, the vast majority of those called Swinfield still live in the city of Leicester. A few migrants have settled in other parts of the country but their ancestors lived in Leicestershire and Warwickshire in the 19th century. One branch of the family emigrated to New South Wales in the early 19th century and remains there today.
