I have been a genealogist for over 25 years. I researched my own family lines as far back as
I could. I have been very successful with some of them, not so successful with the others - I
blame my ancestors for that. Changing their names, doing a disappearing act, and
completely missing from census in some cases.
I then decided to concentrate on a one name study and undertook initally the Sturman name.
This was my maiden name and there are not many of them. I then decided to extend the
study to cover my married name of Stubbs as they were so close together in many indexes.
I have been doing the one name study for over 10 years.
The variants on the name Stubbs are:
Stubs - often from Lancashire & Cheshire where one family used this variant, however, it
does often appear by chance where the name has been mispelt.
Stubbe - one family from Bedfordshire, which descended out of Norfolk, used this spelling.
Although it does occasionally crop up in various indexes pre 1850 instead of the name
Stubbs.
Stobbs - mainly from Northumberland and Scotland. Once the family moves south they then
tend to call themselves Stubbs, with very few retaining the name Stobbs.
The name originated from 'dwellers by treestumps' though to come from Yorkshire 13c but I have found early references to the name in Norfolk around the same time.
George Stubbs the artist. No legitimate offspring. One illegitimate son George Townley Stubbs who had no issue so don't expect to descend from him. He was born 1724 in Liverpool.
John Stubbs from Norfolk. Famous for having his right hand amputated for writing about the proposed marriage of Elizabeth 1 to the catholic duc d'Anjou. This John Stubbs has a large family tree in Norfolk.
William Stubbs, Bishop of Oxford. Born in Knaresborough. Large family tree.
Charles Stubbs, Bishop of Truro. Born in Liverpool, descended from a farming family in Yorkshire. No connection to the Bishop of Oxford.
Numerous Stubbs in England & Wales. Approximately 37,877 births registered 1837-2004. Many more not registered up to 1875.
The name is widely distributed through England - with the largest number of Stubbs in Cheshire, Staffordshire and Yorkshire. There are small families in Wales, but most of these originated in England.
I have all the birth, deaths and marriages from the General Register Office indexes 1837-
2004. All Stubbs that appear in the census returns 1841 -1901. A complete list of PCC will
indexes, together with copies of some wills, also extracts from most wills 1750 onwards. I
have copies of many wills from the various courts and indexes from most courts. I have
extracts from the original parish records for the name Stubbs. I have extracted the complete
probate index for England & Wales 1858-1967.
I also have lists of adoptions, births in India, Army births, deaths and marriages. Soldiers
who died in WW1 & WW2.
I do have many complete family trees for Stubbs families all over the UK. A large amount of
photocopied original certificates for births, marriages & deaths - mainly sent to me by other
Stubbs researchers. There are also some original certificates which were mis ordered by
other researchers.
I am not running a DNA project but one has been started in the USA.
