About the study

This one-name study began as a way of trying to connect the South African Siegenbergs in my family tree with other Siegenbergs I found who were pencil-makers in nineteenth-century London. I started with a very small amount of information but am gradually managing to connect the pieces. The name was registered with the Guild of One-Name Studies in 2014.

As of June 2020, I have details of almost 400 people with this name. Common first names in this collection are Abraham, Benjamin, Dinah, Elizabeth, Emanuel, Florence, Hannah/Annie, Henry, Jacob, John, Jonas, Joseph, Julia, Lewis/Louis, Rachel, Samuel, Sarah and Solomon.

Members of the family changed their surname to Allen, Carter, Curzon, Davis, Higham, Lewis, Moore, Mortimer, Roberts, Ross, Seaton, Segen, Stafford, Sterndale, Stewart and Thomson.

Variant names

I have not registered any variants of the name. Several examples of the spelling Seigenberg can be found, but I am not considering this as a variant until I know more.

Name origin

This is not known yet.

Name frequency

The name is rare in the UK, US and South Africa. For example, the 1940 US Federal Census lists nobody with the name. In the UK Electoral Registers 2002-2013 there are 16 people with the surname Siegenberg. The South African Jewish Database - Centre for Jewish Migration and Genealogy Studies lists 12 people named Siegenberg who are buried in Johannesburg. The JewishGen Online Worldwide Burial Registry database lists 2 burial records in Melbourne, Australia.

Data

I have collected information from South African death records, gravestones and burial records, UK census records, BMDs and various passenger records, obituaries, Google alerts, and newspaper announcements.

DNA

I am not aware of any relevant DNA test results.
