About the Scantlin One-Name Study

I have only started an ONS for the name SCANTLIN within the past year (2009). I have been researching my own family history and in the course of this discovered that there were relatively few SCANTLINs or SCANTLINGs in the census returns and in BMD Registers. I have only just registered the name and variants with the Guild of One-Name Studies

Variants

The registered variant is SCANTLING, but there are possibly others such as SCANDLING. My own anscestors seem to use both SCANTLIN and SCANTLING interchangeably.

Origin of the surname

At present I do not know the origin of the surname SCANTLIN. I am however aware that 'SCANTLING' is a term for a measuring rod or a small beam used in ships.

My great great grandfather Michael SCANTLING was born in Cloyne County Cork Ireland in 1792, so the name is likely to have some Irish connection - possibly a derivation of SCANLIN?

Frequency of the name

1841 Census: 10 SCANTLIN 18 SCANTLING (Total 28)

1851 Census: 8 SCANTLIN 10 SCANTLING 3 SCANDLING (Total 21)

1861 Census: 13 SCANTLIN 24 SCANTLING (Total 37)

1871 Census: 17 SCANTLIN 18 SCANTLING 1 SCANDLING (Total 36)

1881 Census: 13 SCANTLIN 5 SCANTLING (Total 18)

1891 Census: 9 SCANTLIN 4 SCANTLING (Total 13)

1901 Census: 6 SCANTLIN 12 SCANTLING (Total 18)

1911 Census: 8 SCANTLIN (Total 8)

These numbers do not take into account several daughters who married and took on other surnames.

Distribution of the name

The distribution of my own family originates from County Cork Ireland, via Cambridge and Northampton to the East End of London (Bethnal Green and Shoreditch) then to Leigh on Sea and Ilford Essex to West London where I was born.

There seem to be other 'concalves' in Clitheroe Lancashire; Fulham West London; Norwood in South East London - but I have so far found no connection between these branches. In most cases there seems to be origins in Ireland.

Data

I have so far collected 1841 to 1911 Census Data for the SCANTLIN and SCANTLING names which I have on Excel spreadsheets. I also have as many BMD references to SCANTLIN and SCANTLING from Free BMD, IGI and LMA Parish records as I can find. These are also on Excel spreadsheets.
