I first started out on my voyage of discovery of the Scantlebury family history and origins of the surname when a cousin gave me the birthdays of my grandfather, Charles Widdon Scantlebury and his seven siblings, Albert, Arthur, John, William, Florence, Susan, Alice and Beatrice the children of John Bartley Scantlebury over a decade ago. I was then hooked visiting Cornwall to try find my Great-Great-Grandfather John Scantlebury and his ancestors. With a growing list of parish baptisms, marriages and burials in Cornwall together with a equally long list of GRO indexes of Scantlebuy births, marriages and deaths it became increasing certain that would take the form of a one name study.
I have this belief and theory that all Scantleburys (and variants ) come from the same family in Lanreath
Have a look at my web site Origins & Variants of the Scantlebury surname
The earliest record I have is for a Richard SKEBURYOWE found in the Fleet of Fines in 1414, the earliest marriage record for John Skentbewe to Mary Pale in Lanreath Cornwall in 1560 a year later their first child Johan was bapisted in Lanreath. It is from this family that the Scantleburys are decended from. John Skentbewe
