About the Rowlatt One-Name Study

This is my GOONS page for the surname Rowlatt (plus variant spellings). The available data (which is held on my personal website below) is constantly being updated so please bookmark the site and check in often. I am always willing to share any information I have gleaned over the years, so if you think your family names tie in anywhere at all, please email me. If you are a Rowlatt, or connected to one, then I would love to hear from you!

Variants

Variant spellings of the name include Rowlett, Rowlat and Rowlet plus one or two other permutations.

Origin of the surname

Books on surnames suggest that the name Rowlatt or Rowlett is derived from the French name Raul, one derivative being Rowlatt and another being Rawlins/ings. However I have yet to find any definite proof of this, although it does seem to be the consensus opinion.

Historical occurrences

The earliest known reference I have found in England appears to be in 1208, in the reign of King John, where the name of Roelet is listed in the Curia Regis Rolls for Hampshire.

Frequency of the name

Spelt as Rowlatt, there are only 278 occurences of the name in 1881. If you add the most common variant spelling of Rowlett, the total number increases to just 721, so the name is fairly uncommon.

Distribution of the name

In 1881 the main distribution of the name appears to be in Northamptonshire, the West Riding of Yorkshire, and Leicestershire. If you add the most common variant spelling then the counties of Middlesex and Lincolnshire are included as well.
