About the study

I began my genealogy One-Name study research into the PIMBLE / PYMBLE name through the study of my own family history. My maternal grandmother was Alice Mary PIMBLE. I never knew any of my grandparents being the 7th child and had not heard the name PIMBLE or PYMBLE mentioned by anyone during my early years.

As the surname interested me and in order to understand why I hadn't heard the name before, I started out looking at phone books to find there were few of them in the UK and none in the immediate vicinity. I registered the name with the Guild in 1991 and have been accumulating data ever since.

Variant names

The variants that I research are: PIMBLE and PYMBLE. Occasionally I find that an entry may have been written as Pemble but this is a name in it's own right. The majority of living PIMBLE / PYMBLE can trace their ancestry back to a limited number of people include Robert and John (born in Herefordshire), George or Richard (born in Gloucestershire).

Name origin

The name(s) are most frequently found in the Counties of Herefordshire and Gloucestershire in the UK and also in the London area, though there are early references in other southern counties of England. It is thought that the name may have been derived from the name PYM, but there is no supporting evidence for this. An alternative, equally unproven, links the name to Lake Bala in Wales which was previously known as Pimble Meer.

Robert PYMBLE, after which a suburb of Sydney, Australia is named, began his life in Herefordshire, England before emigrating to Australia in 1821 together with his family, he spent a considerable number of years in London as did many of his siblings. Robert's parents were Philip and Mary nee WATKINS, they married in Gloucester in 1771.

It is not known exactly when Robert moved to London but it was in May 1808 he married Mary Jenison at Milton by Gravesend, their children were all baptised in July 1820 in Hackney prior to emigrating Australia.

It is from Robert that the Australian contingent of PYMBLE originate.

A close relation to Robert was Susannah PYMBLE who married Capt. John Hardman LISTER. They married in 1827 and a copy of the record from the Parish Register is available on the Pimble website

Project Background:The Pimble/Pymble DNA project was set up 2006 and we have interesting results so far.People with this uncommon surname are mostly to be found today in the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States. Those in the UK, Australia and a significant number of those in the US can trace their descent from a handful of individuals from the counties of Gloucestershire and Herefordshire in the United Kingdom.

Participation in the project is an opportunity to uncover information not provided by paper records. The results of test may help you to identify which family tree you belong to and which family trees are related.

The Y-DNA test tells you about your direct male line, which would be your father, his father and so on back in time. The Y DNA test can only be taken by males, if you are female then perhaps you have a father, brother, cousin who might take the test on your behalf.

The Y-DNA test result CONTAINS NO PERSONAL INFORMATION and the test is different from those used by forensic scientists in criminal investigations and by doctors to identify paternity. Furthermore the test can NOT identify a unique individual as close male family members (brothers, cousins, uncles) will in all probability have identical results.
