About the study

A 'One Name' study into the surname Pennyfather and associated variants. The study has a Facebook Page and a DNA project. Currently I have found 126 different ways the surname has been spelt or mis-spelt/transcribed
Some of the most common variants/spellings of this surname are: Pennefather, Penneyfather, Penifather, Pennifather, Pennyfeather. Penyfather, and Peniefather. These are just a few of the many ways of spelling the name found so far.
 

Variant names

The Pennyfather family shield/crest comes from a Pennyfather Grocer in London in the 1600's, and only applies to that branch of the family and its descendants, although most including myself use it in my research correspoondence.

Name origin

The meaning of the name is: 'penny-father', a miser, pinch-pennie, scrape-good and niggard.

An old couplet says:

The liberal doth spend his pelfe,
The pennyfather wastes himself.
