About the Paget One-Name Study

I started my one-name study of PAGET in 2000, initially to trace my own Paget ancestors in Shoreditch, London, but my interest in the name began to encompass all the different Paget family lines throughout the country and beyond.

Variants

Common variants are Pagett and Paggett. Padget is more prevalent in the north of England, Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and Suffolk.

Historical occurrences

• Sir James Paget (1814 - 1899) physician; born in Great Yarmouth in 1814, he eventually became surgeon to Queen Victoria.
• Henry William Paget, Marquis of Anglesey (1768 - 1854); commanded the cavalry at Waterloo and famously lost his leg in that battle.
• Sidney Paget, artist; illustrated the original Sherlock Holmes stories, using his brother Walter as a model for the detective.
• Lou Paget, sex educator; author of several best selling books on sexuality.

• UK Civil Registration date 1837 - 2000;
• PCC Wills and Admons, 1858 - 1943;
• UK Census, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901;
• Parish registers - extensively for several counties;
