About the study

I began my researches in 2001. PADDINGTON is quite a rare surname and this fact emphasised the importance of every piece of information I found. It seemed a logical step to register with the Guild of One-Name Studies, which I did in 2003.
I have found quite a few PADDINGTONs in Canada and Australia, though most in my database live or have lived in England.
I am always very pleased to hear from others who have an interest in the PADDINGTON name and who would like to exchange information. Please contact me through the link at the bottom of the page.

Variant names

The variants which interest me most are PARRINGTON and PATTINGTON, both of which occur in my family tree.

Name origin

The name PADDINGTON derives from a place-name. The most well-known is situated in Greater London, there is another on the outskirts of Warrington in Lancashire and there was a much smaller place near Dorking in Surrey.
My own ancestors were firmly rooted in Hampshire, where they were living in East Wellow 1648.  It is unclear where they came from.  Others who bore the name or its variants, such as Hugh de PATINGTON, rector of Avington in 1326, lived elsewhere in Hampshire.

Historical occurrences of the name

I haven't discovered any famous PADDINGTONs.  The nearest claim to fame is Albert Hillman PADDINGTON who played left-half for the Saints Football Club between 1899 and 1903!

My favourite ancestors are both women:
  • Elizabeth Charlotte PADDINGTON who worked her way up from a house servant in Charlotte M Yonge's household at Otterbourne in 1861, to become cook to Sir William Heathcote at Hursley Park Mansion 20 years later.
  • Frances PATTINGTON who died in 1707.  She left an amazing will, sharing out amongst her relatives what must have been all her clothing and household goods.  One of her bequests was "I give unto my brothar Andrew Patingtons Dattar Anne tenn shilings & my Castar hate and my beast sewte of Lining and woollen."

Name frequency

Based on data from the Office of National Statistics it is estimated that:
  • PADDINGTON is the 19,377th most common surname, making it quite rare
  • it is estimated that there are 216 living PADDINGTONs

Data source: Surnames, England & Wales, National Statistics 2002.

Distribution of the name

132 individuals with the name of PADDINGTON were recorded in the 1881 Census, which placed the largest concentration in Hampshire (59) and the second largest in Middlesex (34). However, at the time of the 1861 Census there was also quite a large PADDINGTON population in Lancashire.
