My name is Robert Newman and I have been researching my family history since 1980. I joined the Newman Name Society in 1994 and I am their researcher and archivist.
This study is owned by the Newman Name Society, The first Newman Chronicle was produced by Tony Newman of Canada in October 1986, this was the beginning of the Newman Name Society. In the October 1991 Chronicle, Tony announced the founding of the Newman Name Society on 1 January 1992. Founding office holders along with Tony included: Anne Cole from England, subscription officer for the UK, Louisa Shermerhorn from Canada, subscription officer for North America, and who also took on the job of Treasurer, and Sandra Beckett from Australia, subscription officer for Australasia, and who produced all the NNS Chronicles between 2004 and 2013.
The Newman Name Society and the name NEWMAN were registered with the Guild of One-Name Studies in 1995.
The Study researches and collects records and artefacts relating to the name NEWMAN and its variants from around the world. These records are then used to construct family trees and to try and connect the different family trees.
In his introduction to this first edition, Tony wrote:
'The Newman Chronicle will be of interest to Newmans, and Newman kin who desire a greater knowledge of their family history and genealogy. I hope to publish successive issues at half-yearly intervals with at least part of the content being contributed by the readership.
'In addition to publishing selections from accumulated Newman historical material, the Newman Chronicle will provide a platform for genealogical enquiry. To maintain a balanced format, items of a general nature, some in a more reflective vein, will be included. Again, the readership can assist here by submitting photographs, family trees, family recollections, and general genealogical gleanings, or by offering contents or suggestions.’
It remains as true today as back then. The Newman Name Society remains dedicated to preserving Newman family history and establishing Newman genealogies.
The society provides a means through which like-minded people who are interested in Newman genealogy, can discuss ideas, help each other and exchange information.
We invite Newman descendants to join the Society and participate in the collection of our ancestral knowledge and stories. Membership is open to anyone with an interest in any aspect of the Newman name, whether through lineage or otherwise. No information on living individuals will be shown on our pages.
The current annual membership is £(GBP) 6.00 payable via PayPal. Contact details below.
The Penguin Dictionary of Surnames gives the origin as 'new man/settler, newcomer' and so appears in many locations. It has also been suggested that could be given to someone who was emancipated from serfdom as a 'new man'.
