About the Nevitt One-Name Study

I began researching my Nevitt line in 1986.I have traced back to my 5xgt grandfather John Nevett who

married Elizabeth Fretter in Northants in 1761.I soon became interested in all occurrences of the Nevitt

name.The first Nevitt study group meeting was held in 1993.In 1994 the surname was registered with

The Guild Of One Name Studies.Our journal The Nevitt/Knevett Historian first appeared in 1996.

Variants

The usual variants are Nevatt, Nevett, Nevitt,and Nivitt.

Origin of the surname

It is now believed that Nevitt was originally a Welsh surname beginning life as Ednefyd, becoming

Edenevett, then Denevett, and finally Nevitt.

Historical occurrences

Two well known Nevett/Nevitt's were- Billy Nevett 3 times Derby winner and winner of many other

classic races.And for 25 years champion Northern jockey.Known as 'The Cock Of The North'.

Richard Barrington Nevitt. Confederate soldier,a member of The North West Mounted Police,artist,and a

pioneer of medical education in Canada.

Frequency of the name

In the 1881 census, Nevitt and variants are recorded 578 times.

Distribution of the name

Early records suggests that the Nevitt name was mostly located in Shropshire and Cheshire, later

spreading to Lancashire,Staffordshire,Warwickshire.Also to be found in the early records in the city

of London and Home counties.
