About the Kitney One-Name Study

My study of the name Kitney, is attempting to link family members back to the original families in Kent UK. From my study it is obvious that the name originally was spelt Kidney so I have included in my research the name of Kent based Kidney members and their descendants

Variants

Kidney and Kytney along with other spellings have been included in my study. Some families had siblings with the surname of both Kidney and Kitney. It obviously depended on how the vicar spelt their name in the baptism records.

Origin of the surname

This unusual and interesting surname is of Irish origin and is a dialectal variant of the name Kidney, an Anglicised form of the Gaelic O Dubhain, the prefix 'O' meaning descendant of, plus 'Dubbin', normally a byname from a diminutive of 'dubb' meaning black, but in this instance as a result of association with the homonymous 'dubham', it means kidney.

A communication from a family member, unsubstantiated, suggests the first Kidneys arrived in Kent from Ireland in the late 1500s.

The first found record of Kidney in Kent, is the baptism of Edmund Kidney, son of Edmund in 1625 at Boxley.

The next records is possibly the father of the above: Edmund Kidney who in 1633 was ' Fined and made to kneel in the aisle of Boxley Church for six Sundays for being drunk on Easter Sunday'.

Distribution of the name

Apart from the UK descendants of the Kitney/Kidney families, they are also found in many countries, these include, Australia, Canada, Malta, New Zealand, South Africa and the USA. It has also been suggested that there are descendants in Argentina and the Caribbean Islands.
