About the Hockridge One-Name Study

I began researching the Hockridge name and its variants in 2006.

Variants

The early parish records show various spellings of the name but the main variants are Hockridge, Hawkridge, Hockeridge, Hawkeridge and Hauckeridge. By the early 1800's the name had settled to just Hockeridge, Hockridge and Hawkridge.

Origin of the surname

It is believed the name originated from a farmstead near Bideford and the earliest parish records I can find do confirm the family was in Bideford in 1560.

Distribution of the name

The earlier records show the name in Cornwall and Devon. By the middle 1800's it had spread to Wales, London and Durham. By the late 1800's the name also appears in Australia, Canada and America.
