About the Hicklin One-Name Study

My Hicklin One Name Study officially began in 2009, although I have been collecting Hicklin data since I first became interested in genealogy following the birth of my son in 1991. I had been helped on many occasions by the late Malcolm Hickling, and it was after learning of his death that I felt compelled to use my exisiting data as a basis for a one name study. I am eternally grateful to Malcolm's family and the Guild Of One Name Studies for allowing me access to his gedcom files.

Variants

The registered variants are Hickling / Iceling / Ickling

Origin of the surname

Iceling (pronounced Ickeling) means 'son of Icel' and first appears in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle in a text recording the genealogy of King Penda. Icelingas became the family name given to the kinsmen and descendants of Cnebba Iceling who according to the AS Chronicle was the Great Great Grandfather of King Penda. Present day Hicklins may have been descended from the Icelingas, or named from the places where they lived such as Hickling in Norfolk, Hickling in Nottinghamshire, Hickleton in Yorkshire, Ickleton in Cambridgeshire, Ickelford in Hertfordshire, and Ickelingham in Suffolk which themselves were probably named after Icel and the Icelingas.

Historical occurrences

The Mercian royal family were Icelingas. Penda claimed descent from the royal family of the Angles descended from Woden through Offa King of the Angeln.
