About the Hedges One-Name Study

My desire to seek further information about my Hedges forebears arose when my Father gave me the Birth Certificate of my Great Grandfather George Hedges, born 23 November 1852 at Headington Quarry, Oxford, I subsequently recorded all information relating to the Hedges name hoping to find connections with my own family. This was how the Hedges One Name Study was born and was subsequently registered with The Guild of One Name Studies.

Variants

Headgis, Headges, Hegges and Edges are registered variants. I have yet to be convinced that Hedge Hedger Hodges are true variants. In the Baptism Register for the Parish of Sonning-on-Thames in Oxfordshire, between 1715 and 1723, Hedges, Hegges, Heges and Headges were recorded for 6 baptisms in one family.

Work on this aspect of the Study is ongoing.

Origin of the surname

The Hedges surname is derived from place of residence – at or by the Hedge written as Ate Hegge, or Attehegge. It is possible this is also a surname of occupation.

Work on this is also ongoing.
