This One Name Study grew from a road block in my family history research. I had lost my Hayters in the mid-1800s around the Tollard Royal area of southern Wiltshire.
I have since picked up that trail but have continued collecting other Hayter families. The variant (Haytor) I have currently registered is, thus far, the only version of the name that has appeared in my research. I understand there are other valid variations (Haiter and the like) and I may eventually add them to my study.
The 1881 Census for England and Wales has approximately 2,200 Hayters/Haytors...
The distribution Hayter/Haytor surname in England lays predominately in the counties of Wiltshire, Dorset and Hampshire in addition to large pockets in Surrey, Middlesex and Kent.
This information was provided from the 1881 census data using Surname Atlas (Archer Software).
