The search for Hackneys has been going on for a lifetime. The surname is derived from the place in London before personal surnames used when people were named after the place they lived. The spelling of the place in medieval times was Hakeney which causes some confusion with the surname Hakney which is northern and restricted to East Yorkshire.
Sometime I might have DNA tests done to establish the separate origins of these two surnames.
Spelling variants of the name are Ackney Akney, Haikney, Hakner, Hakney (which see) and Hakeney
The surname is now widespread in England, Scotland and Ireland. Hackneys went to America in early days and afterwards to Canada and Australia. There are now more Hackneys in the USA then anywhere else, including England
The extensive data-base of these surnames and variations includes all the BMD's 1837 to date from the Registrars Office, the IGI, parish register extracts, census records, wills, burial indexes, court records and many family trees.
