I started this One-Name Study after 15 years of researching my own family (Godley). I wondered just how many Godley's there were out there and it escalated from there. My Godley study started 2 years ago and is gradually progressing.
As well as Godley the other variants I have registered and I am collating data for is Godly, Godlee and Godleigh. Where ever you see 'Godley' please assume the other variants are included.
Godley is said to have originated from either Godley, in Cheshire or Goodleigh in Devonshire. It is a topographical surname composed of Olde English personal name 'Goda' = good and 'leah' = wood, clearing.
In the 1881 census the highest distribution is in Sussex (210), followed by Yorkshire (181), then Derbyshire (71), Nottinghamshire (73) and Middlesex (61).
I have so far collated data from 1837-2006 Birth and Death England and Wales, 1837 - 1900 Marriage England and Wales. 1984 - 2006 Birth, Marriage and Death for Scotland
