About the Gimblett One-Name Study

I began the one-name study after an attempt to prove or disprove the family rumour that we were related to Harold Gimblett, the Somerset and England cricketer. As a result I collected a lot of information about the Somerset branch of this name. Looking on the 1881 census, I realised that Gimblett and its' variants were not common names and the rest, as they say, is history.

Variants

The registered variants of Gimblett are Gimblet, Gimblette, Gimlett, Gimlet, Gimlette

Frequency of the name

There's not many Gimbletts out there! In the 1881 census there were 282 instances of the name. This jumped to 385 in the twenty years to the 1901 census. However, according to the ONS statistics at http:/taliesin-arlein.net/names/search.php, there are only 312 instances of the name in England and Wales as at September 2002. Some Gimblett's emigrated but I have little information as to density and distribution.

Distribution of the name

On the home front, Gimbletts appear to have concentrated mainly in the South West of England and South Wales. Obviously some strayed and they have been found in London, Newcastle and the Isle of Wight among other places. Some earlier Gimbletts have been found in Birmingham and Essex.
