Variants

Fovargues, Fauvarque, Farvaques.

Origin of the surname

Information at my disposal as at 2005 appears to indicate that all the Fovargue Family currently living in Great Britain is descended from only one man, Jacques Fauvergue, who came over from Tourcoing in North France, towards the end of the sixteenth century (late 1500s) and lived originally in Norwich. Descendants lived in the fenlands of Lincolnshire or Cambridgeshire or (some) moved to London.

Historical occurrences

There was a Jacques Farvarque mentioned in the church records (1633) as being a deacon in the Walloon church in Norwich at this time. Having these facts in mind, it should be considered that the Fovargues of that time (descended from persons who came from the Tourcoing or Tournai area of northern France) were not Huguenots but Walloons. Until the mid-1800s most of the Fovargues worked in the Fens, firstly in draining the fens and later as farmers. This was a very important factor in tracing the Fovargues, most of whom I have been able to relate one to another from the 1500s to the present time. All this information will be in the latest edition of my Fovargue Family Indented Pedigree, currently covering about 400 pages of A4.

Frequency of the name

My guess is that I have recorded about 1,500 Fovargues scanning the 500-year period covered by my research and about 120 Fovargues living in Great Britain at the present time. My research covers England and Wales only.

Distribution of the name

To the best of my knowledge, my records include every Fovargue (including the birth, marriage and death registration index number necessary for those who want to obtain a birth, marriage and death certificate) from 1513 to 2002 inclusive. This involves 1,420 births, 793 marriages and 667 deaths.

Data

The data is set out as an INDENTED PEDIGREE thereby endeavouring to show the relationship of every Fovargue to one another. Where the information is available, limited pedigrees are given where a Fovargue has married into that family.
