The initial results of a study of the Foslett/Poslett names and variants, firstly in the UK and then Canada will follow.
There are many variants of the Foslett name - Foslet, Fosslet, Fostlet, Poslett, Poslet, Posslet, Postlet, Porslett, Phoslet and others have occurred on official documents. Robert Foslet married Elizabeth Tucker 12th July 1796 and one of their children, John, used the name Poslet, in later years an extra final letter t was added to both variants.
These names appear in North Devon and North Cornwall in the 17th Century
Robert Foslett (or variant spellings) born about 1772 was a Blacksmith in Tawstock, North Devon and is the furthest back I have positively traced in my family history.
There appears to be 82 instances of the blood line in my tree plus spouses and children of females born of spouses with a different name.
The name appears to have originated in North Cornwall/Devon and spread to Tiverton, Newport (Mon), Bristol and a few found in Harrogate, Edmonton, Rugby and Bath - occasionally elsewhere. There are relatives in Canada and U.S.A.
An extensive family tree now exists and the Guild has some of the Births, Marriages and Deaths in their archives. Some photographs exist and current contacts within the extended family. A great deal of research has been done with Census, War Records, Civil Lists, Newspaper Cuttings, Baptismal Records and more.
The Tiverton Museum has web site for a Virtual Victorian Family and this is loosely based on Posletts working at John Heathcote's Silk Lace Factory that was in Tiverton, Devon. In 2011 there is a lady living who worked alongside members of the Poslett family and married one of them - I am in contact with her and hope that she will be able to add to my resources.
