At present, the Foad Surname DNA Project is the main thrust of this one name study. We have tested the Y-DNA of 9 male FOADs and found that 7 of them match each other fairly closely on 67 STR markers. The genealogies of two other FOAD participants indicated that they were related to several of the other members, while the DNA test proved otherwise (possibly due to the occurrence of NPEs or misattributed paternities, MAPs). We interpret these results as tending to confirm (though not proving) our Single Founder Hypothesis. These matching participants all belong to Haplogroup I1a with polymorphisms M253+, Z58+, Z59+, Z60+, Z140+, F2642+, FGC2491+, Y1843+, A1546+, and CTS9834+.
We have also tested 5 FOAT/FOATE participants who, so far, do not match any of the FOADs, but who form two distinct genetic lines, belonging to haplogroups R1b-L21+ and R1b-L48+.
This project is still small and all of our 'conclusions' are tentative. Obviously, we need to test more FOADs and FOAT/FOATEs.
