About the study

At present the main thrust of our project is the Foad Surname DNA Project.  My co-administrator in this project, who had compiled an extensive genealogical database of FOADs in Great Britain and elsewhere, has unfortunately had to retire.  The research on DNA continues.  The FOAD Surname DNA Project was begun in March, 2008, and so far we have tested 15 FOAD/FOAT/FOATE participants and found only 5 genetically distinct family lines, the largest of which has 7 of our project participants.  So far we have found no connections between the FOAD and FOAT family names.  All tests are done at Family Tree DNA.

Variant names

FOAD, FOADE, FOAT, FOATE.

Name origin

In the 1881 census of England and Wales, almost all the FOADs in the country lived in the eastern half of Kent County, indicating a possible/probable origin there and lending weight to the Single Founder Hypothesis.  A similar distribution for the FOAT surname reinforces the idea that they, too, might share a common origin though, different from the FOADs, in Kent County.

DNA

At present, the Foad Surname DNA Project is the main thrust of this one name study.  We have tested the Y-DNA of 9 male FOADs and found that 7 of them match each other fairly closely on 67 STR markers.  The genealogies of two other FOAD participants indicated that they were related to several of the other members, while the DNA test proved otherwise (possibly due to the occurrence of NPEs or misattributed paternities, MAPs).  We interpret these results as tending to confirm (though not proving) our Single Founder Hypothesis.  These matching participants all belong to Haplogroup I1a with polymorphisms M253+, Z58+, Z59+, Z60+, Z140+, F2642+, FGC2491+, Y1843+, A1546+, and CTS9834+.

We have also tested 5 FOAT/FOATE participants who, so far, do not match any of the FOADs, but who form two distinct genetic lines, belonging to haplogroups R1b-L21+ and R1b-L48+.

This project is still small and all of our 'conclusions' are tentative.  Obviously, we need to test more FOADs and FOAT/FOATEs.
