Study details

Study: Dunbar

Category:  1 - A study where research using core genealogical datasets and transcriptions is in its early stages.

Guild hosted website: dunbar.one-name.net

DNA website: www.dunbardna.org/

Contact: Mr Patrick Dunbar

About the study

A study to include worldwide DUNBAR's of any period

Variant names

Variants of the Dunbar name are rare. Dunbarre can be found in early records. Dumbar, Dumbarr, Dombar can appear in documents, and in census recordings for Scotland, England and Wales, the spelling for a particular family may differ in consecutive censuses.

For the purpose of this study, unless there is a compelling reason not to do so, 'Dunbar' is used as the primary surname, and the suspected miss-spelling or possible variation is included within the record as an 'other' name.

Name origin

Before the adoption of surnames the Dunbar bloodline is believed to be traceable to Crinan of Dunkeld, probably the grandson of Duncan, a lay-abbott of Dunkeld who was killed in 985 AD. Descendants were named as Cospatric or Gospatrick, and the family seems to have been wealthy and powerful in Scotland from these early times, but in the 1400's lost much land and influence in Scotland due to political actions.

DNA

As there is a well-established Dunbar DNA Project on the web I will not be starting a second. My DNA results may be viewed on the existing site.

The Dunbar DNA Project may be viewed at www.dunbardna.com

Links

As of October 2018, an updated web site is ready for publication. It should be accessable via the Guild of One-Names Study with the address dunbar.one-name.net

It is my intention to make actively-researched Dunbar lines the main content of my new site. At present my own family and collateral families fill most pages, but other lines will follow as and when they are edited.

With the increasing use of YDNA to aid surname research, some information applicable to family lines appearing within this one-name study will be included. At the present, investigation into the descendants of the Dunbar baronets of Westfield, Morayshire, Scotland is in progress, and information on this family can be found on the site.

If you have any Dunbar queries, or have data you are willing to share, please contact me.
