Study details

Study: Batstone

Variants: Batston

Category:  1 - A study where research using core genealogical datasets and transcriptions is in its early stages.

Contact: Mr Christopher Batstone

About the study

A study of the Batstone name wherever it occurs. Initially this will focus on the information I have from the UK but I aware of significant groups in Canada and New Zealand.

Variant names

At the moment the only variant I have registered is Batston, which occurs as a spelling mistake in a number of places and is not necessarily consistent as a name in its own right. I'm also starting to find a number of occurences of Badstone but at the moment am unsure of its status as a variant. What is interesting is a website that gives Batstone as having come from Badstone which it derives as a corruption of a village in Shropshire. This is contrary to all my evidence which points to the Batstones coming from south east Devon.

Name origin

As I say above as far as I can tell the name originates in East Devon. But as to the meaning or derivation I have no real idea. It is one of my main objectives to try and resolve this so if anyone has any ideas I would be very pleased to hear from them.

Distribution of the name

In the 1881 Census there are 255 entries for Batstones and an analysis shows the majority were born in Devon although place of residence is showing a migration to surrounding counties and London. In 1901 the number of entries has risen to 382 but only 25% have Devon as their birthplace.

Data

I have lists of registered Births, Marriages and Deaths for England and Wales from 1837 to 1995 and am in the process of making these available via the One Name Study site. I will be adding the links here shortly. In addition I have 1881 Census data and will be looking to get data for other censuses over the coming year (2007). I also have access to IGI data and am trying to link and add value to it.
