No two studies are the same, so there is no "right" way to start or carry out your study. The Guild does not try to dictate how one-name studies are carried out, so what appears here is guidance based on best practice from a wide range of studies. The approach adopted by the one-namer will vary from study to study depending on the individual undertaking the one-name study and on the size of their study.

That said, the Guild does believe that the well-run one-name study will cover - possibly at various times - all of the "seven pillars of wisdom" listed below:

  • Data collection
  • Analysis
  • Synthesis
  • Publicising the study
  • Responding to enquiries
  • Publication of results
  • Preserving the study
